Border between Thailand and Cambodia (Aranyaprathet / Poipet) closed

Border Closures Between Thailand and Cambodia: Situation Remains Tense

Tensions at the border between Thailand and Cambodia have escalated further today, June 7, 2025. Thailand has unilaterally closed several border crossings, including the important crossing in Sa Kaeo (Aranyaprathet to Poipet).¹ ² ³ The Cambodian side was informed of these measures by the Thai military, with the closures occurring without prior official notification to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.⁴ ⁵ ⁶

Cambodia has repeatedly emphasized its desire to bring the disputed border areas before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to find a lasting solution and avoid unnecessary conflicts.²,⁷,⁸ Thailand, however, rejects the ICJ’s jurisdiction in this matter and prefers bilateral negotiations.²,⁷,⁹

For travelers, it’s important to note that air travel between the two countries remains possible, as the current restrictions primarily affect land borders.¹⁰,¹¹,¹² The situation is dynamic, though, and it’s conceivable that the situation could change daily, with border crossings like Poipet potentially reopening with restricted hours as early as tomorrow, as new, limited operating hours for June 8 have already been announced.³,⁴,¹¹
