Thailand and Cambodia agree to ceasefire at talks in Malaysia

In a decisive diplomatic step, Thailand and Cambodia agreed on a ceasefire during negotiations in Malaysia on July 28, 2025. The talks were led by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who currently chairs ASEAN, with observers from the United States and China

High-ranking military representatives from both sides are due to meet at the Thai-Cambodian bordertomorrow morning at 7 a.m. local time. The aim is to coordinate the next steps in the implementation of the ceasefire and to build trust.

Both governments also announced that they would resume negotiations on the exact course of the border.

The agreed ceasefire is associated with great hopes for the more than 260,000 refugees who are holding out in improvised camps on both sides of the border. Many of them had to leave their homes within a few days, often without warning or adequate supplies. The news of the agreement has now raised hopes that they will soon be able to return to their villages.
